Alpaca Basic Facts

The Alpaca is an animal similar to the Llama that lives in Southern Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, and Northern Chile. Their scientific name is Vicugna Pacos and the two breeds are the Suri Alpaca and Huacaya Alpaca. The altitude they live in is 3,500- 5,000 m (11,500- 16,000 ft) above sea level. Alpaca's are about 81- 99 cm (32- 39 in) long and weigh around 48- 84 kg (106- 185 lb). They eat hay, grasses, and plants. Alpaca's are famous for making fluffy clothing like coats. They're sheared once a year so that the clothing can be made. The fur colour on the front is white and the back is black.
