Aardwolf Recap

The aardwolf is a hyena- like mammal that lives in eastern and southern Africa. It lives in shrublands and bushlands. The word "aardwolf" means "earth wolf" in Afrikaans and Dutch. It is also called "maanhaar jackal" in Afrikaans and in English it's "mane jackal". One final name is the civet hyena. Aardwolves are in the same family as the hyena's. It eats insects, mostly termites and can eat up to 250,000 in one night. It's fur is a yellowish colour and has black vertical stripes. It is 55-80 cm (22-31 in) long without it's tail. The tail is about 20-30 cm (7.9-11.8 in) long. It weighs about 7-10 kg (15-22 lbs). Southern aardwolves are smaller than eastern aardwolves. This mammal avoids mountain ranges and lives where termites are produced.
